Y’know, sometimes, you just wanna rock.
KICKING INDIFFERENCE – the second album from The Pictures – is a platter’s worth of pure pub rock power pop. It ain’t intellectual and it ain’t aesthetically abstract. But sometimes that’s just what the doctor ordered…
Featuring members of You Am I (Davey Lane) and The Deserters (Luke Thomas), it’s not surprising The Pictures love a pop tune. There are echoes of all the master power pop songsmiths here; The Cars, Big Star, Sloan and The Replacements. Highlights include supremely catchy, fuzzed-out, ‘Can You Hear It?’, and ‘Thank You Honey’; – surely the best power pop tune Paul Westerberg never wrote.**With mellower Lovetones-esque orchestral pop interspersed throughout, KICKING INDIFFERENCE is a solid and varied album.
The Pictures are doing a February residency at Yah Yah’s in Melbourne, and they’re also playing Spectrum on Saturday February 7. Get on down if you wanna get your rock on.
