A while back, a good friend theorised that one sign of a great album is you can play it quietly for a mellow trip or play it loud and really rock out.
Formed in April 2009, Melbourne’s Love Connection play lo-fi lock groove that works equally as a quiet-yet-intricate accompaniment for a Sunday arvo barbie, or played at full blast charging down the highway on a 3-hour road trip. This is the kind of repetitive synth rock Stereolab or Yo La Tengo pummel into long walls of sonic texture, or like The Velvet Underground jacked-up and jamming with Qua.
Combining the slacker, good-time-bummed-out-vibe vocal stylings of The Flaming Lips with tribal drumming and multiple singers, their self-titled debut (sporting mighty fine cover art from HuncH) segues seamlessly from one brightly-coloured sound slab to the next, mellow to uptempo. Cryptic, cool, and subtly nuanced. A big thanks to Melbourne’s Sensory Projects for continually finding and releasing awesome local bands.
