Experimental music. Not everybody’s bit of crumpet, that’s for sure. Personally, I can never be sure if it’s ‘art’, ‘noise’, ‘art-noise’ or just ‘shit’. But I’m deeply attached to melody and like to bust out old George Michael tapes on long car trips, so odds are I’m not really their target audience.

Having said that, I am genuinely excited about the New Weird Australia bi-monthly compilation series. Because if all goes according to plan, this little project that could is going to bring all sorts of musical geniuses out of the woodwork and "shrink the notion of distance between innovative Australian artists and their international compatriots". A worthy cause indeed!**It works like this: the New Weird team solicit material from Australia’s underground, experimental types, make a selection of the best tracks, and then release them for free on the interwebs. Volume 1 contains a bit of post-industrial, some pseudo krunk-maggot, a dash of free jazz, some tribal-ish walloping, and lots of beepy sounds (yes, those are all technical terms).

Go check it out – it’s free, and if you don’t like this volume, wait a couple of months and grab the next one, which will no doubt be a whole new creature altogether.
