Here’s the thing about the new album from legendary 13th Floor Elevator attendant Roky Erickson and current "mid-level band" Okkervil River; it’s not what you’d expect. Don’t think psych, think psyche.
For me though, it’s incredible, and I am a huge fan of both of these bands. The song writing is so careful and measured, but full of quiet excitement. There’s a lot to like for fans of Lambchop, Son Volt and more recent Bob Dylan. Roky’s voice is (I can’t help it!) very rocky. ‘Goodbye Sweet Dream’ is a brilliant example of purposeful writing and production, with a driving beat backed by powerfully gentle guitars and subtle vocal strength.
It’s a perfect fit, it sounds classic, and it’s an album that will swirl around your head for a long time if it clicks.
