There are so many reasons to love LCD Soundsystem.
Their ‘disco punk’ represents the best that sound ever wrought, or will; but they’re not tied to one genre or mood.
James Murphy actually writes songs about stuff we deal with and talk about every day, like hipster superiority, gentrification, homeland pride vs. Euro-fetishism, missing your friends and getting drunk.
They sound like all your favorite cool bands, Eno, Bowie, ESG, Arthur Russell and The Velvet Underground.
This is Happening is another fantastic album. It’s less vulnerable than Sound of Silver, but just as varied without being a retread. And every song is freakin’ GOOD.
My only complaint would be that ‘catchy’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘good’ – so why do they regularly release annoying singles, like ‘Daft Punk Is Playing At My House’ and ‘Drunk Girls’ (the worst song on this album, which incidentally sounds a lot like ‘White Light White Heat’)?
