Rising rock star Jeff Buckley arrived at the Mud Island marina on the 29th of May 1997 to play a few songs beside the dark, serpentine river. Even in the middle of the night the heat was overwhelming and after the show Buckley decided to cool off with a swim in the Mississippi. A few minutes later he vanished.
Ten years on it’s clear there will never be anyone like Jeff Buckley. Supernaturally talented, shockingly pretty and tragically fragile, he is – and always will be – an icon for a generation. Today Buckley’s voice resonates powerfully as ever and in this exhibition photographer and friend Merri Cyr displays images that reveal his life on and off stage.
**"I photographed him when he was angry, tired, pissed off," Cyr told ‘The Guardian’ in 2005. "He wanted people to see his authentic self as opposed to a rock icon." Shuddering in their intimacy, the photos in this exhibition offer a spooky yet seductive look at a beautiful boy who still seems close enough to reach out and touch.
