Gallery A Sydney 1964-1983
published on 15th March, 2009

Amongst the quiet streets of Paddington in the 60s and 70s, Gallery A was known as a melting pot of artists, intellectuals, musicians, actors and outcasts – a site of artistic freedom, seminal exhibitions and wild parties.

It was the first gallery in Sydney devoted to abstract art and one of the first spaces in Australia to exhibit Aboriginal artworks. The progressive minds behind A launched the careers of countless major Australian artists and made a dramatic impact on the art scene in Sydney at the time. With a sister Gallery A in Manhattan, they were also active in bringing New York artists to Australia and ensuring Sydney’s place in the international art world.**Shoot forward few decades (and west a few kilometres), and Campbelltown Arts Centre is today one of Sydney’s most visionary art centres (really).

As part of their program this year they are about to open an in-depth survey of Gallery A, taking us behind the scenes of the innovative art space and the creative minds of the 60s and 70s in Sydney… Groovy baby.
