Laiths’s bearded vignettes at the MCA stopped me dead. They were a nice stab at a process-based practice conducive to RSI. Friend of the humble biro and paper, this primary shader guides a white rectangle into a secondary maze. Seemingly superfluous, his ordinary components string together elements of hero worship, beards, family and authority which are actually all completely necessary in preparing you for his eye trip. Just back from a residency in La Rochelle (that’s in France), there’s a biographical and historical nod to his experiences in Inland Sea Shanty. It won’t smell of baked goods and sex but you can think about it.
Couching interconnected themes Darren Sylvester passes the time taking photos, among other things. His Large Format Works are the photo equivalent of his first music release, entitled Greatest Hits. Darren’s work makes me laugh, but I don’t think it’s supposed to. He polishes the turd moments we have (waiting for the phone to ring/ the morning after) and presents them as 120x160cm monuments to make us think about mortality. His inclusion of food items suggests your dissatisfaction with Subway is relevant to your new-found hatred of love. GOMA QLD has already bought two of his larger than life size works. So if you’re hungry or like seeing what’s important, see this.
