Few spaces capture the awkward loneliness of life like the Darren Knight Gallery. Whether displaying works by Noel McKenna, Rob McHaffie or Michael Harrison, the sparse, fragile aesthetic perfectly conveys the ups, downs and utter emptiness of city living. Surprisingly though, the gallery’s next show by artist Robert Rooney offers something completely different. Sifting through dusty paperbacks his local second hand bookshop on a stifling afternoon in 1999, artist Robert Rooney stumbled on a rumpled copy of LE RIRE.**The VOGUE of its day, LE RIRE was an illustrated journal that celebrated the famous and fabulous stars of gay Paris during the 1890s. Taking inspiration from the vibrant comic-strip illustrations, Rooney has crafted a sequence of cheeky pieces. Check it out and enjoy more of the gimmick-free sincerity that makes this space so unique.
