‘Peloton’ refers to a cluster of riders in a bicycle race who help each other by sharing slipstreams.
It’s also a little understated shop front space in a Chippendale back street that has been showcasing contemporary experimental work from a vast and varied range of local and international artists since 2004.
The directors Matthys Gerber, Lisa Jones and Giles Ryder are all artists themselves who occasionally exhibit in the space. Just over a year ago they expanded to a second space a few doors up, enabling them to simultaneously show both established and emerging artists in separate venues.
**It’s important for the city’s art scene to have not-for-profit artist-ran spaces independent from commercial galleries, From Marickville to Newtown to Chippendale, many find refuge in the inner-west (check out also Peloton’s neighbourhood friend MOP.
From 6pm on Thursday February 28, new solo shows from two very interesting artists will be opening; photographer Anke Satacker’s UNKNOWN ZONES at the P19 space, and a retrospective of abstract painter and sculptor Boyd Turner at P25. This little corner of the city is one to keep an eye on.
