Reality Check – Watching Sylvania Waters

The transmission of ‘the real’ through a television monitor is nothing new. Cut the Orwellian association and date back to 1992 when the ABC first broadcast cult reality series Sylvania Waters through burning boxes nationally.

Documenting the lives of Noeline Baker and Laurie Donaher of 48 Macintyre Crescent, Sylvania Waters, this small suburban program had a big impact.**Dissecting the scenes, kinships, neighbourhood notions and national stereotypes reflected by said show, some ten televisionaries-come-artists showcase Reality Check – Watching Sylvania Waters.

The line up of artists is flawless and the content is well, real; The Kingpins extract exemplary aplha matriachs, while Ms & Mr video people who were short-listed to star in the show. Alongside sculpted portraits by Peter Cooley, and model houses by David Lawrey & Jaki Middleton, this grand display is all in name of a weekly fix screened in a small box.
