Soap City – Bababa International
published on 1st September, 2009

When hearing the words ‘soap city,’ one can only imagine some sort of pillared, cavernous ancient Greek bath house, steamy, sudsy and serene. One could be completely wrong. Soap City, like previous Bababa International projects, will remain at least part secret, until you experience it for yourself.

Anything but a performance piece, their work demands some form of physicality from either themselves, their audiences or both. They could be digging a hole, making curry or painting someone’s nails. Or, in the case of the last several weeks, cooking up a free breakfast at their studio residency every Saturday for anyone to enjoy. It’s this generosity that puts their ideas into perspective.**Taking note of great thinkers like Buckminster Fuller, Bababa are themselves the greatest of thinkers. And, like Buckminster Fuller, they are fascinated with our Earth’s resources. If in fact finite, as we have been lead to believe, they are finding ways to further them. Being a self proclaimed ‘do everything’ art collective, they will do everything to involve you and better our existence.
