Thomas Edison wasn’t just the guy who invented the light bulb, motion picture camera and the phonograph. Edison also had a way with words. He said that opportunity is missed by most people because it’s dressed in overalls and looks like work. But it seems in Paddington, opportunity doesn’t always come in the form of the working man’s attire.
Sydney artist Nick Benson found his figurative overalls in a boutique retail space positioned on Glenmore Road. The store itself had shut, but there remained three months left on the lease: a perfect window to present a handful of talented, young Sydney artists.
The result is The Garment Store Gallery, a temporary space housing a collection of works from Sydney based artists practising across a range of mediums. The upcoming show features Dan Simon, Maja Baska, Lillian Rumble and Alex Greene, who also curated the show. Shifting between the violent, absurd, melancholic and contemplative, this exhibition takes the opportunity of a vacant space to explore some peripheries of contemporary art.
