Who doesn’t love Japan? I certainly don’t not love Japan, and nor should you. You should certainly appreciate Japanese new media. And that’s one reason to go to this exhibition of contemporary photographic work by Japanese and Australian artists before it travels to the Opera City Gallery in Tokyo.

The other reason is simple; the images.

From black and white portraiture to interactive video installation, TRACE ELEMENTS examines the intrinsic relationship of photography to time, memory, consciousness and spirit.

Featured works include those by Japanese photographer Seiichi Furuya; beautiful examples of the hundreds of intimate portraits he took of his wife before her untimely death.**Other highlights include one of Lieko Shiga portraits of people living in London’s council flats and Kazuna Taguchi’s painterly photos. Then there’s the home-grown talent like Alex Davies, Jane Burton and Sophie Kahn, who meddles with new media and a Victorian-futurist aesthetic.

As part of the exhibition the guys at Performance Space will be screening S/N by the Kyoto ensemble Dumb Type, an installation/performance about AIDS, gender, sexuality, nationality, death and other light fluffy topics.
