I Killed My Mother

Description:
The ‘can’t live with her, can’t live without her’ premise of I Killed My Mother definitely hits home. The relationship between a mother and her gay son is revealed through Hubert (writer and director Xavier Dolan), who struggles with his mother’s overbearing love and the increasing tension and volatility between them. Hubert’s disdain for his mother’s lack of style and taste, as well as his own self-obsession, make for a coming-of-age tale that is both terrifyingly familiar and wildly funny. See 20-year-old Dolan’s much-lauded, heavily-awarded directorial debut as part of the Sydney Film Festival this month. – JP
