In an effort to match our southern siblings’ enthusiasm for Melbourne Cup Day, we’ve come up with the Two Thousand top three Cup pubs.

1. The Royal Hotel- probably best if you want to pretend you’re actually trackside. Dress to the nines and act as if the tab is a bookie.

2. Shakespeare Hotel – once you’ve lost all your hard earned on mystery trifectas and the office sweep you aren’t exactly going to be on a champagne budget. You’re having steak for dinner.

3. Abercrombie Hotel – think of it as getting a head start for the weekend. Avoid the queues and the cover charge that you lost on the donkey that came in last place. – GK
