Where else but the Sydney Underground Film Festival (SUFF) can you see a man obsess over a half-woman-half-eel; get close to Bin Laden’s Mountain caves, or experience 1980s smell-o-vision while cradling a warm bucket of popcorn? The SUFF opening night kicks off with George Gittoes’ THE MISCREANTS, which takes us deep into the heart of a ‘forbidden zone’ (aka The Middle East). While everyone who sees John Waters 1981 film POLYESTER, will be issued with an ‘Odorama card’ which they are instructed to scratch and sniff during certain intervals of the film. It doesn’t get any more underground than this. – AD
