Following on from his first release, City of Shadows, Peter Doyle stays true to form with another photographic journey into the underbelly of Sydney.
Presenting haunting and engaging police photography from the early 20th Century, this book sheds light on a crime-ridden Sydney of old. These aren’t the mug shots we’re used to seeing in the tabloids today though – these exhibit a relaxed nonchalance, showing the accused smiling and free to inhabit the space being held. Crystal clear imagery and intense subject combine to create a chilling book, perhaps morbid but necessary.
