Love him or hate him, Devendra Banhart always elicits a strong reaction, and rightfully so – the man’s a walking contradiction. But if you love the idea of intimate photos of your favourite freak folk stars, and you don’t find ‘The Pied Piper of Caracas’ more annoying than commercial TV, then this is the book for you.

With old and new folk luminaries, such as Vashti Bunyan, Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart and Ramblin Jack Elliot, the group of artists chronicled in Lauren Dukoff‘s first book of photography, Family, make for one curious gang of folk disciples.**Dukoff began photographing good friend, Banhart, well before his rise to fame, but over the last few years she has risen to prominence herself taking photos of Beck, Kim Gordon and Mary J. Blige.

Family brings together the images, drawings, music* and writings of her closest friends and collaborators as they vamp-up backstage, fight boredom on the road and wander aimlessly in the countryside. The unassuming photos capture Dukoff’s comrades perfectly – with their guard down and fragile egos turned off.

*The book comes with free music downloads by the artists involved
