If I told you, "I made a smell… in my pants!" You would think I was some kind of comic genius. You wouldn’t be wrong, but this would only reinforce smell’s status as the underdog of the senses. And that don’t smell right.

If Sissel Tolaas told you she made a smell, you would take her seriously. And so you should. Tolaas collects scents from around the world (tallying around 6,700 at last count), synthetically creating and re-creating them in art and elsewhere (Ikea, Volvo, Adidas, the list goes on).

The current issue of mono.kultur contains an interview with Tolaas and 12 scents she has re-created, from her own personal scent to the scents of 11 men in acute states of anxiety. This ain’t scratch ‘n’ sniff for the faint-hearted, my olfactory friends. This is the raw data of life. Take a whiff on the wild side.
