You’ll Like This Film Because You’re In It: The Be Kind Rewind Protocol
published on 31st January, 2009

How many times have you come up with an awesome idea for a film and then scrapped it because of laziness/no money/stupid reality? Enough already with the lame excuses. If you really want to make a film, Michel Gondry’s neat little book will have you writing, shooting and passing out at the wrap party in no time.

The book follows Gondry’s dream to democratise filmmaking, an idea he first explored in his film BE KIND REWIND and later in an exhibition at New York’s Deitch Projects, where gallery visitors who followed a set of rules could produce a movie in a matter of hours.**The greater part of the book is a memoir, tracking the development and results of the Deitch show. For wannabe filmmakers, however, it’s the reproduction of Gondry’s set of rules from the exhibition (known as ‘The Be Kind Rewind Protocol’) that will be of real interest. Grab a camera, call your friends, clear a weekend and make your dreams – and those of an oddball Frenchman – come true.
