So you’ve got a Mr P tape dispenser and a laser-cut Perspex chandelier, but you’d turf them both in the name of the lopsided ceramic bowl that belonged to your nanna. Why? While designed objects exist to please our aesthetic taste, the things we hold on to and cherish are those with which we connect – objects that have a deeper story than the journey from freight box to shelf.
Beautiful on the Inside is working to change the way we buy designed objects. Each hand-picked piece is chosen for its inherent story as well as design process, with care taken to curate both local and international mix. Chairs by Melbourne-based Daniel Barbera and mouth-blown candleholders from Kari Ari Arim Rim, are placed beside Pegleg tees from New York and Brazillian Melissa shoes.**In an extra bid to ‘bring commitment back’ to object design, in August the store will hold a one-off exhibition as part of Sydney Design 07. Following the brief: ‘till death do us part’, designers such as Matthew Conway and Huseyin Sami have been invited to create pieces that make us say ‘I do’ for longer than these two.
