Being inexplicably drawn to that charming Blank Records ape logo made perfect sense after I learned it was designed by Detroit’s Mark Dancey – who wrote and illustrated much of the gut-bustingly funny Motorbooty Magazine that I devoured as a hungry young midwesterner.
Talking to John, the guy that owns Blank Records (and used to run Silver Rocket on Pitt Street), coincidences like this crisscross our mutual histories of music collecting/playing/obsessing. Blank is the culmination of a life devoted to hunting down quality platters, and you can tell as there’s an amazing amount of great stock squeezed into this tiny shopfront on Parramatta St – and more rolling in routinely.
Last Friday and Saturday the owner closed shop so he could collect a fresh acquisition of 2nd hand merch – 5000 LPs and 6000 CDs, not an uncommon haul apparently. Best to call first if you’re making a long trek, they do close occasionally for record fairs and scores such as this. Or check out their sales online here. Prices start at $15 or $20 for LPs, $10 for CDs, and the selection is all choice cuts.
