I am a total dork. I have a notebook wherein I jot down films I haven’t seen that I want to. Presently it includes Szerelmesfilm (Hungary, 1970) , The Gore Gore Girls, and You’re Gonna Miss Me (to give you some polar opposites which brag of my obscure and refined taste).
Dr. What! – Sydney’s largest selection of DVDs and videos – is heaven for film geeks like me. One approach to their cavernous selection is mission style, with notebook in hand as I have done many times. On recent outings I nabbed rare gems like The Swimmer (1968) (after Dan Clowes mentioned it in an old interview – it’s really good), Dennis Hopper’s Out Of The Blue (after Chloe Sevigny cited it as a favorite – it’s pretty rad) and Mario Bava’s Hatchet for The Honeymoon (‘cuz Bava’s the bomb, duh).
The other approach is to float through the aisles and let fate take its course. There’s normal stuff, arthouse stuff, some seriously some weird films, and bizarre categories. Anyone interested in VHS erotic thrillers? Or high school comedies?
Best of all, the owners are incredibly knowledgeable about their stock and film in general – this is where being a Mom and Pop store beats anything online, hands down. They’re constantly getting in new stock, and keen to hear your suggestions. They don’t have everything, but they definitely have heaps.
