Hats. They are either lame, or they are the complete opposite. The latest Ginny & Jude designs are definitely the latter.
According to Rabia Lockwood, her bespoke hatwear designs show influences of two very different characters. “Ginny is quite frivolous - a cheeky, flirty blonde, prone to wearing floaty lace dresses and doing foolish things such as going on long walks without her parasol and getting into spots of bother with dashing young gentlemen.” Pretty much, that is the girl I wanted to be in year six.
“Jude on the other hand is more of a practical soul - a defiantly feisty brunette who lives on her own and smokes a pipe. She likes vibrant block colours worn with black, stripes and geometric shapes, textured fabrics.” Pretty much, the girl I want to be now.
Using antique millinery trim from the early 20th century Paris, Germany, Austria and Japan, Lockwood has crafted headpieces and hats that are smart, casual, and yet super fancy. Her 'Fly Me to the Moon' series featured a stylised bird, with a wingspan of 40cm. Other ranges, like her 2010 'Razzle Dazzle Rose', evokes country lanes, meadows at dusk and lazy afternoons in the orchard.
On second thought, maybe I am neither of these girls. If I were on the moon, I'd get high. If I were lazily lounging in an orchard, I'd be getting drunk on grappa. Still, I like that there are hats on hand to cover up both states, with style.
