You’re either the type of person who wants to stay in the Cross or you’re not. Make no mistake: the address might say Potts Point, but the Diamant is mere metres from Kings Cross’ iconic Coke sign. And if you’re the type of person who wants to stay in the Cross, the location is perfect.
The hotel is smartly appointed, and all the basics are covered: comfortable beds, friendly service, and perhaps most importantly, good pressure in the showers. The courtyard rooms come with generous balconies that look across Darlinghurst to the CBD. Room service is turned up a notch, provided by Time To Vino downstairs – which, for quaffers, is a must-visit.
For those who want all of the Cross, it’s right on the doorstep: the mania of Bayswater Road on a Saturday night, the strip clubs and hovering hookers, the bars and restaurants of Kellet Street, the lights that enchanted Kenneth Slessor almost a century ago. For those who want to stray further, Darlinghurst is next door; Oxford Street and Surry Hills are a moderate walk; Bondi is a direct train from Kings Cross station, about two minutes from the hotel; and the eateries of Victoria Street Potts Point are equally close.
Those who want to stay in Kings Cross could do much worse than the Diamant, a comfortable haven amongst all the excess the suburb has to offer. Those who don’t should still consider it.
