Antenna International Documentary Film Festival
published on 26th September, 2011

I’ve said before that I could watch a documentary about a bar of soap, but luckily, the films on offer at Antenna sound way more interesting.

Antenna is a new film festival dedicated to documentaries, and before you groan about festival overload, let me assure you the program looks damn good, and I’ve gone to the trouble of picking a few films well-suited to you, our dear readers.

How Are You follows provocative Danish-Norwegian contemporary art duo (and boyfriends) Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset. In El Sicario a retired hitman talks about his old job in a hotel room where he tortured and killed a businessman. How To Make A Book With Steidl covers exactly that. Ken Kesey’s acid test road trip is documented in Magic Trip. Maids and Bosses explores class divide in Latin America. If the words Williamsburg, indie rock, and McCarren Pool get you wet, dive into Pool Party. Regretters talks to those who wish they’d never undergone sex change operations. And an eccentric Slovakian mayor tries to get the young people in his town to “make babies” in Matchmaking Mayor.

We’re also excited about the free screening of Chris Marker’s 1983 classic Sans Soleil (Sunless). Character-driven, political, and often confronting, Antenna proves real life can be way wilder than fiction.
