A wise man once said retail is for suckers. We’re inclined to agree. Perusing the curbside collections, or curb surfing, is without question the best source for indoor furniture, outdoor furniture, cool bikes and Franklin Mint crap. Aside from the free stuff, there’s a thrill in the chase and a pride in showing off your best scores. You might think its best to scope out the richer suburbs. But it seems they didn’t get rich by throwing things away. You’re better off in the ‘burbs of baby boomers, where 60s furniture is considered naff rather than ironically cool.**Always surf with a buddy for quality control (‘seriously dude, that rug stinks’). But be professional, maintain your cool. During a recent expedition, I spotted a pogo stick. I exclaimed a little too loud. The econovan behind us shot ahead and descended upon that pile, and that pogo stick. That shmuck is probably hopping on it now! Amongst the curb crawling vans though, there is a certain camaraderie, but ultimately it’s every one for him or herself. But we’ll throw you a tip dear grommet – surf’s up in the North West.
