The Thousands

Upon hearing about Clement Habicht’s 100 Kites show at Lamington Drive, I got all excited about kites and decided to make one myself. I checked some DIY sites and there were some mighty nice kites flying around on them. Thing is, they were all amazingly pretty and looked like they took ages to make. The whole thing reeked of whimsy and effort – not my style.

So I went into the backyard, grabbed some sticks and joined them together using bandages. So far, so good. Next, I grabbed my shoebox of empty coffee packets (don’t ask) and made a big sheet of them. A quick wrap-around, a lick of packing tape, and I had a kite that smelled as good as it looked!**All that remained was to attach a ball of string and alight to the rooftop. OK, so it didn’t work, but the wind picked up later in the day and we got some sweet airtime. It would have been even easier if I didn’t have to run around in circles trying not to fall off the roof. I consider this an unbridled success.
