In Newcastle a select few have dedicated themselves to fostering a full urban cleanse like Sydney City Council has never seen. Instead of increasing already soaring rentals prices, shunning development applications, and creating unworkable licensing requirements, this DIY renewal is working from the inside out, starting with individual ideas, interests and initiatives.
In its 12th year, Sound Summit is one of the more established cultural Newcastle initiatives and is a buffet of everything sonically and mentally stimulating. Based mainly at The Cambridge Hotel and The Croatian Club, this line-up is out of control. San Fran’s space-tornado Moon Duo, Wet Hair (USA) and Japanese neo-classicists Mono will respectively headline the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. A prime selection of locals including Fabulous Diamonds, Collarbones, Scattered Order, Domeyko/Gonzalez, Kirin J Callinan and Guerre personally picked by labels and collectives like Octopus Pi, Siberia Records, RIP Society and Yes Please for their individual showcases.
To sum it up, this conference-meets-festival could be likened to a musical nirvana. Envelope-pushing, all-absorbing live musicians from near and far, innovative labels and collectives curating their favourite musical tastes amidst interesting people (who actually give a shit) presenting, debating, and conversing about the music we work for, along with ways we can improve practices and exercise currently unused resources. Borrow a car, take your friends and make it happen. Short trips like this are good for the soul.
