Odd Future Sweat Shop Sydney
by ALEX VITLIN

Monday January 23, 1.53pm. Odd Future will popping up their, *ahem*, Sweat Shop this week. Opens tomorrow, Tues Jan 24, basement of 80 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst. Judging by the capitalisation, Tyler explained it on their tumblr like this: “OF Pop Up Shop. Sydney. Come, We Will Be There Saying Hi Tomorrow, Mate.” Key point: they will be there. They hung out a lot at Supply round the corner last time they were here:

The Dollar Shop submissions
by CLEO BRAITHWAITE

Tuesday January 17, 3.43pm. Calling artists, designers and makers of things! Alex De Bonis and Louise Helliwell (of Tough Titties fame) invite submissions for well-designed local products to sell in their pop-up, The Dollar Shop, set to launch at 58 Oxford Street in late February.

Items might include (but are not limited to) clothing, jewellery, bags, stationery, self-publishing, photography, posters, instruments, kitchenware and craft. All items sold will be under $20, with a small commission going to The Dollar Shop, so your item must be able to make a profit/break even within this price point! They are also seeking interns/volunteers to help run the shop. For more info hit www.dollarshopsydney.com.au or email info@dollarshopsydney.com.au, or to submit, email submit@dollarshopsydney.com.au

Flickerfest 21st birthday and giveaway!
by US

Thursday 5 January, 7.21pm. “Who likes short shorts?” asked the Royal Teens in 1957. “Many people likes ‘em,” answered Flickerfest in 1991, putting on their first screening at Balmain High School. They were right because since then it has grown into Australia’s biggest (and only) competitive international short film festival, and the 21st birthday edition runs for ten days, starting with a party this Friday 6 January at Bondi Pavilion.

If you can handle five ‘Best of Australian’ programs, five ‘Best of International’ programs (including STEVE, pictured below), two ‘Best of Documentary’ programs, a ‘Best of Oscars Shorts’ screening, a ‘Flickerfest Kids’ screening, a ‘Short Laughs Comedy’ screening, a ‘Short Bites of Horror’ screening, a ‘World of Wacky Animation’ screening, plus two programs of ‘Green Flicks Environmental Shorts’ and the ‘FlickerUp School Shorts Final’ then get a season pass for $125/$140 +BF from here.

Or check the program then do a pick and mix of individual session passes for $13.30/$15 +BF online here or from the Flickerfest Box Office at Bondi Pavilion one hour before each session. Also, thanks to Flickerfest, we have 5 x double passes to give away, redeemable for the 4.30pm session either on Sat Jan 14 or Sun Jan 15. To enter, email sydney.win@thethousands.com.au with the subject ‘we like short shorts’.

Peats Ridge packdown crew get free 2011 & 2012 festival passes
by HANNAH BERZINS
Wednesday 7 December, 11.04am. If you’re a lover of Peat’s Ridge Festival and want to guarantee free tickets for this year AND next year register online to become a “packdown volunteer”. The deal is: on the last day you watch the hungover people pack up, while you stay on camping for another week and work half-days to restore the land to it’s pre-festival state.
There are also the options of working pre-festival and during, where they’ve got heaps of gigs going. You have the option of being part of the decor crew (designing and decorating stuff), the hospitality crew (for those who are culinarily inclined), the green team (making everything look beautiful) or the set up and construction crew (for those who like using the hands they were given).
Rope your friends in, have a post NY’s holiday and get free stuff – it’s win/win!
Need more info? There’s heaps:
Check the Peats Ridge site to check the Volunteer Deposit Scheme, book shifts and get extra volunteer information or apply.
Or join the Peats Ridge Volunteer Facebook group.

Win an iPad 2!
by RACHEL ELLIOT-JONES

Among science fiction blog nerds, Star Trek is often credited with the invention of the flip phone and the tablet/iPad. They predicted the future by matching their current technology with human desire, and then some very smart people raided the prop department and turned their ideas into a reality.

What we know is that before you can predict the future, you must understand the present. So, as The Thousands continues to think about how we can make our content more convenient and mobile, we want to understand what mobile means to you. And, that’s what our Mobile Survey is all about.

In the survey there are only 12 multiple-choice questions that are so quick to answer you might even go back in time. We are also dangling the proverbial carrot with an iPad 2 to give away to one lucky survey taker. The draw is random and we’ll announce the winner on Twitter and Facebook next Wednesday. It’s simple, all you need to do is click here.
