Class, money, sex, and dating. What better source of inspiration for Money Gra$ than Stanley Kubrick’s brilliant Barry Lyndon.
Having missed out on directing a film version of Vanity Fair, Kubrick turned his sights towards William Makepeace Thackeray’s other ode to class anxiety, The Luck of Barry Lyndon.
A pre-methpipe Ryan O’Neal plays the anti-hero Barry, a handsome, charming, and extremely wily Irish rogue who realises that his appeal to the ladies, his gift for lying, and his general good fortune are his tickets out of the poor house. But unfortunately, like the actor portraying him, Barry’s escalating self-indulgence leads to his inevitable downfall.
As well as being visually perfect in every possible way, the soundtrack is brilliantly compiled, with only one major omission.
And the rags-to-riches-back-to-rags story arc allows both our wealthy and poor readers an insight into how The Other Half live. Now that’s value!
