Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures

· Wednesday November 2, 2016

Ahead of the AGNSW's Robert Mapplethorpe retrospective next year, educate yourself on the man/myth/legend/Patti Smith's 'Just Kids' BFF with new documentary, Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures.

The title of the film comes from U.S. Senator Jesse Helms urging other politicians to “look at the pictures” that he deemed so morally reprehensible. And it's true, Mapplethorpe IS most well known for his photographs of intense gay fetish subcultures (lots of cock'n'ball stories here) – and that's half the fun, but not all he was about.

The doco covers the life and work of this trailblazing, uncompromising artist as well as the devastating legacy of HIV/AIDS, and features a wealth of great, obscure interview footage with Mapplethorpe himself, alongside new interviews with his brother and sister, and cult icons (aka our Dream Dinner Party Guests) Peter Berlin, Mary Boone, Jack Walls, Debbie Harry, and Bob Colacello.

If that hasn't tickled your photographic pickle enough, the directors behind the film are the founders of World of Wonder Productions, who gave us RuPaul’s Drag Race as well as docos on Tammy Faye, Heidi Fleiss, the film Deep Throat and notorious club kid killer Michael Alig.

Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures is screening exclusively at Golden Age Cinema in Sydney from Thurs 10 Nov
